Discover Myanmar’s Treasures

Explore legendary palaces, ancient monasteries, sacred pagodas and historic towns in and around magnificent Mandalay.

About Your Trip

Discover the unique fusion of colonial and contemporary influences on this DreamTrip to Burma’s last royal capital, Myanmar. Your trip kicks off with a full-day of exploration of ancient treasures in Mandalay. Cross a surrounding moat for a tour of the Mya Nan San Kyaw Palace and wind through the gold-adorned halls of the Shwenandaw Monastery. See the world’s largest book located in the halls of the Buddhist stupa, Kuthodaw Pagoda. Enjoy an authentic Myanmar menu-lunch before continuing to Mahamuni Pagoda, a Buddhist temple and important pilgrimage site. Walk along the highly photographed U Bein Bridge, the world’s oldest and longest teakwood bridge.

Spend the next day at a scenic town in central Myanmar, the former British hill station of Pyin Oo Lwin. Explore this historic town with a traditional horse and carriage ride, passing quaint colonial-era houses. Next, take in the nearby Pwe Kauk waterfalls, a popular scenic spot for picnickers. Wrap up your two-day journey learning the legend of the marble Buddha sculptures during a visit to the Maha Ant Htoo Kan Thar Pagoda.

What we love:
• Seeing the world’s biggest book, consisting of more than 700 inscribed marble stone slabs, at the Kuthodaw Pagoda.
• George Orwell’s classic novel “Burmese Days” is set in 1930s Mandalay when the country was under British colonial rule.
• Climbing up the 1,729 stairs to the summit of Mandalay Hill for panoramic views of the city and beyond.

Destination

Considered the centre of Burmese culture, Mandalay’s rich and exotic past attracts tourists from all over the world. With Buddhism as the predominant religion, it’s home to architecturally impressive monasteries and striking pagodas, including the Mahamuni Buddha Temple, a major pilgrimage site. Built in 1785, this temple houses a 12-ton Buddha covered in gold leaf. Reminders of Mandalay’s past as the last royal capital of Burma are seen throughout the city, including the Royal Palace. Built in 1861, this mighty fortress is located in the heart of the city, at the foot of Mandalay Hill, surrounded by a wide moat and high walls.

Along with diverse and unique landmarks, the city also offers a variety of savory, authentic cuisine —from Shan and Thai to Chinese and Indian. Notable traditional Burmese dishes include mohinga, a popular rice noodle and fish soup, and htoe mont, a sticky sweet rice cake.
